Myeongdong Church

Myeongdong Cathedral has always been one of my favorite places in Seoul. I feel blessed knowing that there are many churches here, but this one has become my special spot for Sunday worship. Even though it sits right in the middle of a busy tourist area, it still feels like a peaceful escape. When I visited again during Holy Week, the whole place felt extra solemn and meaningful. It was the perfect moment for quiet prayer.

A little background to appreciate it even more. Myeongdong Cathedral was built in the late 1800s, and it is known as the first Gothic Revival church in Korea. It also played an important role in the growth of Catholicism in the country. Today, about 11 percent of South Koreans identify as Catholic, and the cathedral remains a spiritual landmark loved by locals and visitors.

The architecture is beautiful with its tall brick façade, pointed arches, and striking steeple. Inside, the stained-glass windows glow softly and create a warm, serene atmosphere. No picture-taking is allowed inside, which makes everything feel more sacred and undisturbed. I lit a candle at the back of the church and took a quiet moment for myself. It felt peaceful and grounding.

After church, you can head straight into the lively Myeongdong area to explore, shop, and enjoy the food stalls. The contrast from solemn worship to the colorful energy outside always puts me in a good mood.
