태조밥상

Korea’s Food Paradise

If there’s one city in Korea that truly deserves the crown of food capital, it’s Jeonju. Known as the birthplace of bibimbap and celebrated for its rich culinary traditions, Jeonju is a must-visit for any foodie. Every corner of this historic city has something delicious to offer, from hearty soups to colorful side dishes that make you smile with every bite.

During my trip, Kelly and I stopped by 태조밥상 (Taejo Bapsang), a charming traditional restaurant that feels like stepping back into the Joseon dynasty. Even its name pays homage to King Taejo, the founder of Joseon, and “bapsang” means a table full of food. True enough, once we sat down, the table was quickly covered with a royal feast of flavors.

The Feast at Taejo Bapsang

The spread we ordered was nothing short of amazing. The highlight for us was definitely the tteokgalbi (떡갈비), tender, juicy, and perfectly glazed with a sweet-savory sauce. It looked like a humble patty, almost like a Korean-style burger steak, but the taste was rich, deep, and unforgettable. Honestly, tteokgalbi alone makes the trip to Jeonju worth it.

We also enjoyed a bubbling hot pot of spicy jjigae filled with seafood and vegetables, bringing warmth and comfort to the meal. Around it, the table was lined with colorful banchan such as crunchy soybean sprouts, seasoned greens, kimchi, and more. Each little plate added a new flavor and texture, making every spoonful of rice feel like a new adventure.

The combination of hot stew, hearty rice, savory patties, and endless sides made us so happy. This is exactly what Jeonju is famous for, meals that are not just food but an experience.

A Happy Jeonju Memory

Eating at Taejo Bapsang reminded us why Jeonju has the best food in Korea. It is not just about taste, but the feeling of being welcomed, sitting at a table full of dishes, and savoring every bite as if it were a small celebration.

If you ever find yourself in Jeonju, don’t miss this place. Come hungry, bring friends, and get ready for a table that overflows with joy, tradition, and unforgettable flavors.

Because truly, Jeonju has the best food in Korea.
