A Glimpse into Korea’s Glorious Past:
My Visit to Gyeongju

My recent trip to Gyeongju is one I will always cherish. Known as “the museum without walls,” Gyeongju truly felt like stepping into a living history book. It was more than just a destination — it was a journey through time.

One of the most memorable highlights of my visit was our stop at the Bunhwangsa Pagoda (분황사 석탑). This ancient stone structure, built in 634 AD during the reign of Queen Seondeok, is believed to be one of the oldest surviving pagodas in Korea. Unlike most pagodas made entirely of brick or wood, this one is uniquely built using cut stone blocks designed to resemble bricks, which gives it a strong and timeless presence.

As I stood there, gazing at the pagoda, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of reverence. Surrounding it were the royal tombs of Silla kings and queens, their grassy mounds blending harmoniously with the landscape. These tombs, shaped like gentle hills, seemed to sleep peacefully beneath the clear blue sky, guarded by tall pine trees and centuries of tradition.

What made the experience even more special was seeing how well-preserved the Hanok houses, temples, and historical pathways are. It’s clear that the people of Gyeongju take great pride in preserving their cultural heritage. Every corner of the city tells a story — from the quiet temple bells to the winding roads that once welcomed royalty and scholars alike.

A quiet moment in history…
This ancient stone pagoda, built in 634 AD during Queen Seondeok’s reign, stands as one of Korea’s oldest surviving pagodas. Located in the heart of Gyeongju — the former capital of the Silla Kingdom — it whispers stories of a time when Buddhism flourished and royalty walked these lands. Behind it are the grassy royal tombs, gently resting beneath pine trees and blue skies. A humbling reminder of Korea’s timeless beauty and legacy.

For someone like me who deeply values culture, history, and authentic local experiences, Gyeongju is an absolute must-visit. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a foodie, or a culture enthusiast — this city has a way of touching your soul.
